PHASE I :Community Planning Process Funded by U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)

In October 1999, Center for Community Health, Education, & Research, Inc. (CCHER) was awarded a Phase I REACH 2010 grant  to assess HIV/AIDS services and prevention needs of the Massachusetts Haitian community.  Phase I of REACH 2010 is a 12-month planning phase to organize and prepare infrastructure for Phase II.  Phase I is utilizing and collecting appropriate local data for a community Needs Assessment.  Phase II of the project will be the implementation of appropriate interventions/services within the Haitian community.

The core group of the Boston Haitian REACH 2010 Community Planning Group consists of the following agencies:

Center for Community Health, Education & Research, Inc.(CCHER)
Boston Medical Center Clinical AIDS Program
Boston Public Health Commission HIV/AIDS Services
University of Massachusetts Boston, College of Public and Community Service
The planning group is working closely with the Boston AIDS Consortium in creating and utilizing appropriate data collection tools for the Needs Assessment process.  Boston AIDS Consortium is providing technical assistance to help facilitate and guide the planning process during Phase I of the project.

This exciting community planning process has brought together a large number of professionals and community members from Brockton, Dorchester, Mattapan, Cambridge, Somerville, Roxbury and other areas.  During this information gathering phase of the project, the group will be gathering information from providers, key informants, consumers, and the general community to develop an HIV prevention and care plan for Haitians in Massachusetts.
